Monissa maailman vanhoissa perinteissä kuu yhdistetään naiseuteen ja hedelmällisyyteen. Ennen vanhaan oli myös tyypillistä ajoittaa kaikki tärkeät toimet kuun vaiheiden mukaan.
Jos halusi jonkin kasvavan, se kannatti tehdä kuun kasvaessa. Myös sauna kannatti rakentaa kasvavalla kuulla, sillä tämä varmisti pehmeät löylyt. Niin merkittävä osa asioista oli parempi tehdä kasvavan kuun aikana, että sanomme edelleen odottavamme jotain ”kuin kuuta nousevaa.”
Alakuulla taas kasvun uskottiin suuntautuvan alaspäin, minkä takia esimerkiksi juurekset kylvettiin silloin. Alakuulla kannatti myös esimerkiksi siivota.
Nykyään kuunkierron noudattaminen on harvinaisempaa, mutta kokonaan perinne ei ole kadonnut. Pohjoisessa moni poromies nostelee edelleen lihat kuivumaan vain yläkuun aikaan.

In many old traditions around the world the moon is associated with femininity and fertility. It used to be common to time every important action with moon phases.
If you wanted something to grow, you would do it when the moon was growing. The sauna was also worth building during the growing moon, as that ensured gentle steam. So many things were better done during the growing moon that in Finnish we still say that we are expecting something “like the rising moon.”
A declining moon meant that any growth happened downwards, so that was a good time to plant root vegetables. The times when a moon was declining were also a good time to clean up.
Following the lunar cycle is less common nowadays, but the tradition hasn’t disappeared completely. In the north many reindeer herders still dry their meat only during growing moon.
