Suomen mytologiassa ylijumalan asemaa kantaa Ukko, joka asuu pilvien päällä ja hallitsee säätä. Hänet tunnetaan taivaan jumalana – ja varsin äkkipikaisena sellaisena. Ukko saattaa helposti suuttua ja heilauttaa kirveellään ihmisten niskaan salamoita rangaistukseksi. Hyvällä tuulella ollessaan hän saattaa lähettää meille pilviä ja elämää tuovaa sadetta.
Suuri sieni tämän teoksen keskellä, Macrolepiota procerais, tunnetaan suomeksi ukonsienenä, joten se vei ajatukseni vanhaan jumalaamme. Valkoiset jauhosienet, Clitopilus prunulus, taas näyttävät usein pilviltä.
Viimeisten vuosien aikana Ukko on lähettänyt synkkiä pilviä maailman ylle, mutta metsän rauhassa nuo pilvet siirtyvät pois mielestä. Toivon, että tällä näyttelyllä on sinuun samanlainen vaikutus.

In Finnish mythology the highest of our old gods is Ukko, who lives above the clouds and controls the weather. He is known as the father of the sky – a bit ill-tempered father, as a matter of fact. Ukko can easily get angry and use his axe to strike lightnings down on people as a form of punishment. If he’s in a good mood, he may send down clouds and life-bringing rain.
The big parasol mushroom I used in the center, Macrolepiota procerais, is known in Finnish as Ukko’s mushroom, so it made me think of our old god. The white sweetbread mushrooms, Clitopilus prunulus, often look like clouds, too.
In the past years Ukko has sent dark clouds into the world, but in the peace of the forest, those clouds move aside from the mind. I hope that this exhibition has a similar effect on you.
