Pahan silmän myytti on levinnyt laajalle maailmassa. Se on tuttu myös suomalaisessa mytologiassa.
Täällä ihmiset uskoivat, että ”silmääminen” on syynä muun muassa lasten painajaisiin ja aikuisten seksivietin katoamiseen. Noitalahjainen ihminen pystyi pelkällä katseella tuhoamaan naapurinsa onnen tai sairastuttamaan hänet.
Erityisen tärkeät toimenpiteet, esimerkiksi synnytys, haluttiin hoitaa turvassa pahalta silmältä, joten paikalle ei päästetty vieraita. Jos tämä ei kuitenkaan riittänyt, pahan silmän vaikutuksen sai kumottua, kun uhrin vei saunaan loitsittavaksi.
Ehkä tämä silmä auttaa suojaamaan taloa pahan silmän vaikutukselta, vähän samaan tapaan kuin perinteisemmin talojen seiniin kaiverretut viiskannat ja hannunvaakunat.

The myth of the evil eye is widespread across the world. Finnish mythology features it, too.
People used to believe that “eyeing” would cause nightmares for kids and loss of sex drive for adults, among other things. A person with the gift of witchcraft could use his mere sight to destroy his neighbor’s happiness, or to make him sick.
Especially important procedures, such as the childbirth, were handled in privacy, without outsiders, to avoid the evil eye. If this wasn’t enough to help, the way to counter the evil eye was to take the victim to a sauna for some counter spells.
Perhaps this eye helps to protect the house from the influence of the evil eye, a bit in the same way as the more traditional pentagrams and looped squares carved on the walls of houses.
