Linnuilla on suuri rooli suomalaisessa mytologiassa, mutta myös laajemmin. Lintumyytit ovat hyvin samanlaisia laajalla alueella Suomesta Uralille, mikä kertoo niiden merkityksestä.
Täällä lintujen uskottiin tuovan lapselle sielun syntymän hetkellä ja vievän sen pois ihmisen kuollessa. Nuorena kuollut lapsi on saatettu haudata joutsenen siiven päälle. Vainaja on saattanut myös näyttäytyä eläville lintuna, mistä kertoo myös Topeliuksen runosta sävelletty joululaulu Varpunen jouluaamuna. Ikiaikainen tapa ruokkia pikkulintuja talvella elää vahvana Suomessa edelleen.
Sielulintu saattaa lentää vapaana myös ihmisen nähdessä unta. Asetellessani pihlajanlehtiä tämän metsäkauriin siiviksi pohdin, missäköhän sen sielu tällä hetkellä lentää.

Birds play a big role in Finnish mythology, but also more broadly. Bird myths are very similar in a large area from Finland to the Ural Mountains, which tells something about their significance.
Here birds were believed to bring a child their soul at the moment of birth, and take it away at the moment of death. A deceased child may have been buried on a swan’s wing. It was also believed that a passed loved one may appear to the living as a bird. A sad but popular Christmas carol describes a little girl giving a seed to a small bird, the soul of her brother visiting her from heaven. The ancient tradition of feeding small birds in the winter is still strong in Finland.
Soul birds can also fly free when the person is asleep. As I was laying rowan leaves as the wings of this deer, I wondered where its soul currently flies.
