Kun viettää paljon aikaa metsässä, törmää usein eläinten kalloihin ja luihin. Itse pidän niitä monella tapaa kauniina. Nämä eläimet saivat elää ja kuolla vapaina, mutta minne ne menevät täältä?
Matkaavatko ne ehkä samaa mustaa Tuonelan virtaa pitkin Tuonelaan, kuin ihmisetkin päiviensä päätteeksi? Kohtaavatko ne myös Tuonen tyttären, joka toimii Tuonelan joen lautturina ja estää eläviä pääsemästä joen yli äitinsä Tuonettaren luokse?
Petinä käyttämäni kukat ovat lupiineja, jotka on Suomessa listattu haitalliseksi vieraslajiksi. Laji uhkaa alkuperäislajejamme, joten niittämällä niitä viereisestä ojasta – ja hävittämällä ne sen jälkeen – autan vain luontoamme hieman.

When you spend a lot of time in the woods, you come across many skulls and bones. I find them beautiful in many ways. These animals were able to live and die free, but where will they go from here? Will they travel along the same dark Tuonela stream to the underworld Tuonela as all the people in the end of their days? Will they also encounter Tuoni’s daughter, who acts as the ferryman of that river, and prevents the living from getting across to her mother Tuonetar?
The flowers I used are lupines, which are classified here in Finland as a harmful invasive species. The plant threatens our indigenous species, so by cutting them from the nearby brook– and disposing of them afterwards – I’m just helping our nature a bit.
