Esi-isämme tiesivät, että maailma syntyi munasta.
Aikojen alussa oli vain vettä ja ilmaa, eikä maailma ollut vielä muotoutunut. Ainoa elävä olento oli Ilmatar, Ilman Impi, joka kyllästyi yksinäiseen elämäänsä ja laskeutui mereen uimaan. Ilmatar tuli raskaaksi tuulesta, mutta vuodet vierivät, eikä lapsi meinannut syntyä. Tuolloin paikalle lensi sotka, joka muni munansa Ilmattaren polvelle. Kun Ilmatar liikautti polveaan, munat vierähtivät veteen ja rikkoutuivat. Palasista rakentui maa, taivaan kansi, aurinko, kuu ja tähdet. Lopulta myös lapsi päätti tulla itse ulos. Näin syntyi Väinämöinen, suuri tietäjämme.
Yllätyin löytäessäni syvältä metsän siimeksistä vesilinnun munan. Isäni kuitenkin rikkoi taian toteamalla, että ketut pitävät noutoruoasta.

Our ancestors knew that the world was born out of an egg.
In the beginning of time there was only water and air, and the world had not taken shape. The only living being was Ilmatar, the Maiden of the Air, who got tired of her lonely life and descended into the sea for a swim. The wind made her pregnant, but years passed and the child wouldn’t be born. In flew a waterfowl, and laid eggs on Ilmatar’s knee. When Ilmatar moved her knee, the eggs fell into the water and broke. The pieces formed the earth, the dome of the sky, the sun, the moon and the stars. Finally the child decided to come out himself, too. This is how our Grand Shaman Väinämöinen was born.
I was quite surprised to find a waterfowl egg deep in the woods. Then my dad broke the magic by explaining that foxes like takeaway food.
