Ennen vanhaan uskottiin, että jos ihminen selittämättömästä syystä eksyy metsään, saattaa se johtua siitä, että maahiset tai metsänhaltijat ovat johdattaneet hänet metsänpeittoon.
Metsänpeitto on joko fyysinen paikka, tai mielentila, jossa tuttu lähimetsä alkaa yhtäkkiä näyttää vieraalta ja eksyttävältä. Jos metsänpeittoon joutuneen perään lähetettiin etsintäpartio, uskottiin että eksynyt saattaa näyttäytyä etsijöille kivenä tai kantona.
Metsänpeitosta pois pääsemiseksi ohjeistettiin kääntämään vaatteet väärinpäin. ”Tai ainakin sukka”, kertoi Elsa-mummoni. Näin hän oli pienenä tyttönä toiminut, kun hän oli eksynyt äitinsä kanssa hillasuolle.

In the old times, people in Finland believed that if someone got lost in the woods for unexplained reasons, it may be that the magical creatures of the forest had led her under the forest blanket.
Forest blanket is either a physical place, or a state of mind, where familiar forest suddenly seems strange and deceiving. If a search party was sent out to look for the lost one, they believed that she could appear to them as a rock or a tree trunk.
The trick to get out of the forest blanket was to turn your clothes inside out. “Or at least your sock”, explained my grandmother Elsa. That’s what she had done, when she and her mother got lost on a cloudberry swamp.
