Vanhan suomalaisen sanonnan mukaan “sitä kuusta kuuleminen, jonka juurella asunto.”
Sanonta juontaa juurensa aikaan, jolloin suomalaisilla oli tapana ensin yöpyä paikassa, jonne he suunnittelivat talonsa rakentamista. Uskottiin, että paikan haltija ilmestyisi tuolloin uniin kuusen muodossa ja kertoisi, onko sille paikalle rakentaminen hyvä idea vai ei. Jos kuusta ei kuunnellut, otti riskin, että suututtaa haltijan – ja kuka nyt haluaisi vihaisen haltijan kanssa elää?
Kotia lähinnä kasvavalle haltijakuuselle oli myös tapana antaa uhrilahjoja. Tyypillisin lahja oli ruoka, mutta juhlapäivinä kuuselle saatettiin uhrata myös viinaa. Itse valitsin uhrilahjaksi tyypilliseen tapaani sienet.

According to an old Finnish saying you should “listen to the spruce whose roots are next to your house.”
The saying goes back to the time when Finns would first sleep at the spot, where they planned to build their house. It was believed that the guardian spirit of the place would appear in their dreams in form of a spruce and tell them, if building in that spot is a good idea or not. If you didn’t listen to that spruce, you took the risk of angering the spirit – and who would want to live with an angry spirit?
It was also customary to give offerings to the guardian spruce closest to home. The most typical offering was food, but even booze was given on special occasions. My choice of offering is, as usual mushrooms.
